Ceramic Coating vs Wax in California: What Actually Survives Los Angeles?

Wax and ceramic coating do the same job — sacrificial protection over your clear coat — on wildly different timescales. In a climate like Los Angeles's, the difference isn't subtle.

The California sun is a slow-motion blowtorch. In Los Angeles, unprotected clear coat oxidizes years ahead of schedule, dashboards crack, and seats fade — and the fine desert dust that settles on everything grinds micro-scratches into paint with every wipe. Heat is the other tax: a car parked outside in summer becomes an oven that ages every surface inside it.

Head to head

UV defense is the whole game here. A ceramic layer takes the oxidation hit instead of your clear coat, and its slick surface keeps abrasive dust from bonding to the paint between washes.

Who should still wax

Enthusiasts who genuinely enjoy the ritual, show cars that get pampered anyway, and anyone not ready for the coating's upfront cost. Wax isn't wrong — it's just a subscription, and California weather cancels it every couple of months.
