Ceramic Coating vs Wax in Illinois: What Actually Survives Fairview Heights?

Wax and ceramic coating do the same job — sacrificial protection over your clear coat — on wildly different timescales. In a climate like Fairview Heights's, the difference isn't subtle.

Winter is what Fairview Heights does to cars. Months of salt and liquid brine spray coat the lower third of every vehicle, plow trucks throw gravel at windshield height, and freeze-thaw cycles pry at every chip in the paint until it blooms into rust. Illinois summers then swing hot enough to bake all of it in — a genuinely punishing cycle for unprotected vehicles.

Head to head

Salt and brine don't bond to a coated surface the way they weld themselves to bare clear coat — winter washes actually get the car clean, and the paint underneath survives to spring.

Who should still wax

Enthusiasts who genuinely enjoy the ritual, show cars that get pampered anyway, and anyone not ready for the coating's upfront cost. Wax isn't wrong — it's just a subscription, and Illinois weather cancels it every couple of months.
