Tint percentage is VLT — Visible Light Transmission, the light the film lets through. Lower = darker: 70% is nearly clear, 5% is limo. The right answer for Gallup balances three things: New Mexico law, night driving, and the look you want.
Start with what's legal in New Mexico
New Mexico requires front side windows to pass at least 20% of light. Since factory glass absorbs a few percent, most shops install film rated slightly above the limit so the metered result passes. Behind the driver: 20% vlt or lighter (back sides), 20% vlt or lighter (rear).
What each shade is like to live with
Tint here isn't cosmetic — it's climate control. Ceramic film rejects the infrared heat that turns cabins into ovens and blocks 99% of the UV that fades interiors and burns skin on long commutes. With ceramic film, heat rejection comes from the technology, not the darkness — so pick the shade for law and look, and let the film handle comfort.
| VLT | The experience |
|---|---|
| 70% | Invisible; pure heat/UV rejection — the ceramic-film cheat code for strict fronts |
| 50% | Barely-there smoke; glare relief, clearly legal look |
| 35% | The classic — visibly tinted, still easy eye contact and night vision |
| 20% | Dark; strong privacy, workable at night for most drivers |
| 5% | Limo; dramatic but genuinely hard in dark parking lots |
